Face seal housings are designed to create a hermetic, air-tight seal between two surfaces to maintain pressure or vacuum pressure. It is a common electrical feedthrough interface for passing cables or connectors through a panel or enclosure. Electrical feedthroughs with a face seal use an O-ring and jamnut to mechanically seal the feedthrough to the wall or chamber. The O-ring material can be customized, although Nitrile and Buna-N are commonly used. A variety of standard sizes are available for the threaded connections, making it simple to design the mechanical interface of the wall or chamber.
One key difference between these two types of seals is the direction of the sealing force. A vacuum face seal is subjected to an inward sealing force, while a pressure face seal is subjected to an outward sealing force. This means that a vacuum face seal must be able to withstand the inward force of the vacuum, while a pressure face seal must be able to withstand the outward force of the pressurized fluid or gas.
Douglas Electrical Components will manufacture a hermetic electrical feedthrough with virtually any connector, wire, or optical fiber on the market. Further, we can combine different electrical connection types on either side of the face seal to simplify your installation and increase reliability.
Work with our technical sales engineers to confirm the electrical connection you prefer and we’ll design and quote the feedthrough that best aligns to your needs. Additionally, we offer competitive lead times with expedites as low as one week possible.

FAQ
What are the advantages of a face seal?
- Used with thin wall
- Standard interfaces
- Simple to install
What are the disadvantages of a face seal?
- Bulky
Are vacuum and positive pressure interfaces installed in different ways?
A vacuum face seal is subjected to an inward sealing force, while a pressure face seal is subjected to an outward sealing force. This means that a vacuum face seal must be able to withstand the inward force of the vacuum, while a pressure face seal must be able to withstand the outward force of the pressurized fluid or gas.=
What are the recommended torque values for standard vacuum face seal housings?
Here is a breakdown of the recommended installation torque values of standard vacuum face seal housings:
Thread Size | Torque [ft-lb] |
1/2″ | 10 |
1″ | 14 |
1 1/4″ | 16 |
1 3/4″ | 18 |
2 3/4″ | 20 |
