Hermetic sealing is a process of creating airtight seals in electronic systems, preventing external contamination and maintaining optimal conditions. Utilizing Hermetic Type N connectors and feedthroughs ensures complete sealing against air or liquid ingress, crucial for mission-critical applications.

What are Hermetic Type N connectors?

Originating in the 1940’s, Type N connectors are a type of coaxial RF (radio frequency) connector used in telecommunications and RF applications. These applications require impedance in the range of 50ohms-75ohms.

Hermetic Type N connectors are a specialized version of Type N connectors designed with a sealed, airtight construction. Aerospace and military applications such as radar systems use hermetic Type N connectors. Their ability to maintain a moisture-free and sealed environment is crucial for ensuring the reliable operation of electronic systems. A well-designed hermetic Type N feedthrough can not only withstand harsh environments but also incorporate customized design elements to simplify installation.

Features of Hermetically Sealed Type N Feedthroughs

  • Hermetic Type N connector: an RF-enabled coaxial connector using a threaded coupling mechanism for secure connection with a leak-tight connector and housing design.
  • Male and female Type N connectors are available, wherein male connectors have external threads while female connectors have internal ones. This eases the mating process.
  • Hermetic Type N feedthroughs are designed to be compatible with Type N coaxial connectors, enabling them to pass through sealed enclosures. This coaxial connector is integrated with the enclosure and extend across both sides of the barrier.
  • While glass-to-metal sealing is a commonly used method, there are other techniques such as welding, epoxy encapsulation, and more. In glass-to-metal technique, glass is melted at very high temperatures to achieve the required bond or seal. This liquefied glass is pressed against metal and allowed to cool and harden.
  • They can withstand pressure around 10,000psi while stabilizing the internal and external pressure surrounding the device or system. Differential pressures can achieve higher common mode pressures.
  • These connectors can withstand fluctuations in temperature, pressure, and humidity and have corrosion resistance as well.

Applications of Hermetic Type N Connectors

Hermetic Type N connectors are used in electrical and network installations in many mission-critical applications where airtight seals are crucial. Here are some of the application areas.

  • High-frequency applications: These connectors find use in RF and microwave applications with components emitting high-frequency signals, such as in the telecommunication sector, x-ray equipment, satellite and radar sensing equipment, and more.
  • Communication and broadcasting: Hermetic Type N connectors are used in antennas, television sets, radios, and so on for connecting transmitters to the equipment.
  • Medical: MRI and x-ray equipment use Type N connectivity as well as other diagnostic equipment with sensing abilities.
  • Aerospace: Used in radar systems, communication network systems in aircraft, and more.
  • Defense: Hermetic Type N connectors and feedthroughs are used in missiles and radar systems, electronic warfare systems, military vehicles, and more.
  • Testing and measurement: They are used in spectrum and network analyzers, equipment used for measuring quantities in scientific research,
