SMA Connectors, or Sub-Miniature Version A, connectors are popular type of coaxial RF connector used to transmit signal. Since the 1960’s, these connectors have been adopted in various applications from Test & Measurement equipment to commercial TV, cable, and antenna connections. Douglas Electrical Components manufactures hermetic SMA feedthroughs and connectors. Feedthroughs allow the mechanical mounting of the connection point to a system such as a chamber wall, plate, or control box. Using proprietary epoxy material and processing, Douglas Electrical Components hermetically seals SMA connectors or wires terminated with SMA connectors within a feedthrough housing. The epoxy bonds to the connector(s), housing, and connection point between the connectors on either side of the feedthrough. The epoxy itself is low-outgassing, making it suitable for various vacuum and glovebox applications.
SMA Connector Applications
As mentioned earlier, SMA connectors can be used in a variety of applications and industries. Douglas’ hermetic SMA connectors arecommonly specified for applications exposed to harsh environments. This can include vacuum and pressurized environments or those operating in hazardous locations. Our epoxy is suitable for various operating conditions, from cryogenic temperatures and pressures up to 15,000 PSI or 1,000 bar.
SMA Feedthrough – Mechanical Interface
We offer design flexibility to customize the mechanical interface from a simple vacuum face seal, multi-connector face seal feedthroughs and larger PortPlate assemblies with multiple SMA connectors. For positive pressure applications, threaded connections such as NPT housings or radial O-ring feedthrough designs can permit operation in pressures up to 15,000 PSI.
Using epoxy technology, we maximize the number of hermetic SMA connections within the assembly reduce the number of feedthroughs required. Additionally, our technology permits the ability to combine various types of connectors and electrical connections within the same assembly. This can include other coaxial connectors or completely different electrical and optical fiber connections including wires, circuits, and mechanical interfaces.
