MIL-DTL-83723 or MI-C-83723 Series connectors are medium-sized circular components, widely used in the aerospace and defense industries. These connectors are hermetically sealed to prevent the ingress of gases, moisture, and other environmental contaminants. This hermetic sealing also increases their efficiency in challenging work environments. Hermetic-sealed MIL-DTL-83723 connectors are quite popular over other military standard connectors due to the various benefits they offer. This post analyzes the reasons for their increasing demand in the aerospace and defense industries.

Key Features of MIL-DTL-83723 Connectors

M83723 connectors are offered in class A, R, G, and W. They are used in various tactical and mission-critical applications across defense and aerospace industries for the following reasons.

  • Durability: The shells of these connectors are made from materials, like aluminum, stainless steel, and carbon steel. The shell plating is created from nickel alloys like zinc nickel, nickel-Teflon, electroless nickel, electrodeposited nickel, and so on. These alloys improve their capability to withstand high temperatures, mechanical shocks, vibration, etc. Moreover, the connectors are tested for a minimum of 500 mating cycles.
  • Versatility: MIL-DTL-83723 connectors are offered in three coupling styles – bayonet, quick-disconnect, and threaded.
    • Bayonet Coupling: Quick positive coupling is assured in this type of connector by 3-point bayonet coupling system. Moreover, the five key/keyway design of these connectors help eliminate the instances of mismating. Bayonet coupling is ideal for connectors with shell sizes 8-24. These connectors are intermateable with MIL-DTL-26500 connectors with bayonet coupling.
    • Threaded Coupling: This type of coupling ensures excellent resistance to decoupling. You can check the same by looking at the visual mating indicator on the connector. Threaded coupling is ideal for connectors with shell sizes 8-28. These connectors are intermateable with MTL-DTL-26500 threaded connectors.
    • Quick Disconnect Coupling: Push-pull, quick disconnect coupling is achieved with or without a lanyard release mechanism.

This versatility of coupling makes them ideal for box mount, panel mount, and line-to-line aircraft applications.

  • Wide Operating Temperature Range: The connectors are designed to operate across a wide temperature range. For instance, MIL-C- 83723 Series III connectors in classes A, G, and R are designed to operate in temperatures from 65°C (–85°F) to 200°C (392°F). The connectors in class W can be operated across a temperature range of 65°C (–85°F) to 175°C (347°F).
  • Compliance: MIL-DTL-83723 connectors are designed to meet stringent military specifications. For instance, it must meet the recommended operating voltage of 600 VAC(RMS) at sea level and the recommended test operating voltage of 1,500 VAC (RMS) at sea level, 500 VAC (RMS) at 50,000 feet, 375 VAC (RMS) at 70,000 feet, and 200 VAC (RMS) at 110,000 feet.
  • Complete Environmental Sealing: Hermetic sealing helps protect sensitive electronic components in these connectors from harsh environmental conditions, including corrosive gases, moisture, and dust. This protection is important for ensuring the longevity and reliability of Mil-Spec connectors in aerospace and defense applications. Generally, these connectors are hermetically sealed to meet the leak rate of 1×10-7 cc/sec helium. Hermetic sealing also helps improve their temperature rating from 200°C (392°F) to 260°C (500°F).
  • Excellent Contact Stability: These connectors have a rear-release crimp contact system that ensures excellent contact stability.

Applications of MIL-DTL-83723 Hermetic Connectors in Aerospace & Defense

MIL-DTL-83723 hermetic connectors are used in the following applications across the aerospace and defense sectors:

  • Avionics Systems: MIL-DTL-83723 hermetic connectors help establish reliable communication and control in avionics systems within the aircraft.
  • Radar Systems: MIL-C-83723 Series III hermetic connectors are designed to perform in harsh environments. They are used in radar systems, where they ensure uninterrupted performance.
  • Missile Systems: Missile guidance and control systems utilize connectors that can perform under extreme conditions. MIL-C-83723 Series III hermetic connectors effortlessly meet this requirement and are widely used in these guidance and control systems.
  • Satellites: In satellite systems, MIL-DTL-83723 hermetic connectors help protect sensitive electronics from extreme temperatures while maintaining a vacuum-rated seal.
  • Military Ground Vehicles: M83723 connectors are used in military ground vehicles, providing durability and reliability in rugged environments.
